Now It's Official: GP2 to Become the New Formula 2
Under the international umbrella organisation FIA, the single-seater series GP2 that was founded in 2005 will now officially be called the FIA Formula 2 Championship.
It is regarded as an interim stage on the way to Formula 1 that is supposed to close the gap between the young-driver series and professional motor sport. This means that the way for the young drivers up the motor-racing ladder is better structured, now: from karting to Formula 4, Formula 3 and Formula 2 as interim stages to Formula 1.
RAVENOL partner team Prema Racing is going to once again compete in the popular single-seater series this year. Which will certainly attract even more attention from both spectators and media now. In 2016, their debut season in the series, the Milan based squad secured the top-two positions in the drivers’ championship right away to also secure the team title. And Prema also will be supported by their technical partner RAVENOL in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, currently the motor-racing home of Mick Schumacher, as well as in the German and Italian Formula 4 series.
The FIA Formula 2 Championship calendar complies with the planned GP2 calendar and consequently, the major part of the races will be contested in the Formula 2 support program.
